"Darn That Dream" is a popular song with music by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by Eddie DeLange, published in 1939. The song was introduced in the Broadway musical "Swingin' The Dream." The jazz guitar and trombone duet heard here is actually the opening for a big band arrangement performed with The Vermont Jazz Ensemble with whom I played for two and a half years, and is from their first LP release "All of Us" recorded in 1987. It is a beautifully composed song and a classic ballad in the jazz repertoire having been recorded by many great jazz artists such as Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Ahmad Jamal, and so many more. The trombone melody and solo is played by the incredible George Voland, a well known and respected player in the New England jazz scene. I am playing the roll of rhythm/time keeper, and laying down the lush chordal background on jazz guitar for George's superbly performed solo. I wanted to show the roll of the rhythm guitar in a setting like this because I have done and still do perform in duos where I am the rhythm section for another player playing an instrument which can only play single notes. In this context I am like the piano player and the bassist all in one on six strings.
