David Kraus: The Listening Room
Pavane in Dmajor
David Kraus ~ classical guitarReturn to Tunes
Originally composed for the vihuela, a guitar-like instrument and precursor to today's classical guitar, this Pavane by Luis de Milán is a lovely piece and is perfect for a wedding procession, and it is indeed requested
quite often for ceremonies. The musical form known as the Pavane is meant to be a march-like kind of song and there were hundreds written during this period. Luis Milan was a famous Spanish Renaissance composer, vihuelist, and writer on music. He was the first composer in history to publish music for the vihuela de mano, an instrument employed primarily in the Iberian peninsula and some of the Italian states during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and he was also one of the first musicians to specify verbal tempo indications in his music. The music of Luis Milan is popular with performers on the present-day classical guitar because it can be adapted very easily to the instrument. His vihuela music has become a part of the standard classical guitar repertoire along with transcribed lute music of this period.Return to Chronicles
